Each day, people across the world rely on firefighters to keep them safe. These public servants undergo rigorous training in order to better protect the public. They put out fires, respond to car accidents, and many times, save lives. They also often give fire prevention and safety talks to schools and communities. Firefighters give a lot to the community on a daily basis. On March 31st, locals and visitors of Gatlinburg, TN, have the opportunity to give a little bit back.
This spring, the Gatlinburg Firefighter’s Association will host its first annual GFA Fit For Duty 5K Run/Walk. The race will begin at 9 am at the Gatlinburg Fire Department St.1. The event is open to the public, and there will be multiple categories in which to participate. Categories include the
Firefighter Challenge, the 5K Run/Walk, and the Special Clydesdale Division (for participants over 220 lbs.). Rain or shine, firefighters and civilians will run, walk, or jog this course for a great cause.
The Fit For Duty race is intended to bring awareness about improving cardiac health. Cardiac disease is actually the number one killer of firefighters, so all proceeds will be used to buy workout equipment for the Gatlinburg Fire Department in order to improve and promote cardiac health. Along with the race, a silent auction will also be held.
For those looking for some healthy competition, this is a great event. Awards include fire hydrant trophies for the top 3 overall male and female finishers in the 5K Run/Walk, medals for the top 3 in each age division, a trophy for the first place finisher in the Firefighter Challenge, and a trophy for the first place finisher in the Special Clydesdale Division.
This event is open to everyone (children and jogging strollers are welcome), and it will raise money for some very deserving people.
