Tennessee is known for the large amount of caverns that are located in many places in the state. There are 8,350 caverns that are registered in Tennessee. The Forbidden Caverns are located in Sevierville Tennessee. The Forbidden Caverns are America’s most popular caverns. While inside of the Forbidden Caverns you might see sparkling formations, natural chimneys, and a clear stream. There are special light effects inside of the cavern to make them come to life. There are lighted pathways and guard rails inside for safety purposes. The tour itself last for an hour. The Forbidden Caverns are open daily April though November from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. And they are closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, December, January, February, and March.

The Eastern Woodland Indians roamed the East Tennessee’s forest and mountains hunting for hunting grounds. The Indians used the Caverns for many different purposes. In the Winter the Indians used the caves as shelter. And the river that ran throughout the cave was used as a water source. The natural resource “flint” can be found inside the cavern. The Indians used flint to make arrowheads, knives, and scrapers for hunting tools. The forbidden Cavern also holds the largest wall of cave onyx or dripstones known to exist. During the early twenties and until 1943, the cave was used to make moonshine. After 3 years of excavation and development, Forbidden Caverns was opened in June 1967 to the public.
