August in the Smokies 2013

One of everyone’s favorite time of year is just around the corner…the Tax Free Weekend spectacular! Throughout the state of Tennessee you can take advantage of this tax-free event, which includes purchases on clothing, school items, art supplies and computers. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are known for their shopping destinations and are definitely the place to be on Tax Free Weekend!

Head over to Pigeon River Crossing and explore the items at their Sidewalk Sale. Enjoy discounted purchases on your family’s favorite clothing items and still save the sales tax. The sales tax exemption applies to clothing and school items under $100 and computers under $1,500. Stock up your closets and desks from August 2nd to 4th for back-to-school without breaking your vacation budget!

Don’t slack off on your exercise routine on your Smoky Mountain vacation…instead register to run in the Color the Smokies 5K! This first-annual event benefits the Boys and Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains and is held on August 3rd. During the race you will be showered by clouds of beautiful color that will douse you, your hair and your clothes! The color is made of cornstarch and, while biodegradable and completely non-toxic, may not wash out of clothes. Don a white t-shirt and sunglasses and get ready to add some color to your life!

The race doesn’t have to be a race, in fact, event organizers encourage families with children of all ages to attend. Walk, jog or run…it doesn’t matter, as long as you’re having fun! Check out the event and register here.

The second annual Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival will be taking place from August 15th through the 18th. Celebrate your Applachian roots and explore the Great Smoky Mountains, where bluegrass, mountain music and classic country originated. The event will host an intensive songwriting workshop, songwriting contest and more!

Free performances will be put on throughout downtown Gatlinburg, and you will recognize many of the tunes from some of the top charts. Enjoy a performance of “How Forever Feels” and “Three Wooden Crosses” on Friday, “Rock My World” and “Beautiful Mess” on Saturday, and “When We Both Say Goodbye” on Sunday afternoon.
