Christmas is right around the corner, and it seems to have a way of sneaking up on us every year. Like me, you probably have the best of intentions when it comes to holiday shopping. I always plan to start months in advance to avoid long lines, crowded malls and shopper’s block; however, it is often inevitable that November quickly passes and December is upon me before I have time to even finish writing out my Christmas list. But for the hikers on my list (of which there are several), I don’t have to do too much hunting. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have made shopping easy.
And if you’re not quite sure what to get, here are some ideas to get you started:
- A t-shirt and hat combo
- Hiking poles
- A gift card to a great outdoor shop
- Make your own gift pack – Trail maps, travel mug, NOC logo key chain, bumper stickers, an ornament, dried camp food
- A sleeping mat
Here are a few of the best places to shop for outdoor gear:
The Day Hiker. This Gatlinburg staple has all the essentials for hiking, as well as lots of camping novelties and outdoor gifts. (634 Parkway Suite 1)
Mountaineer T’s & Togs. This is your one stop shop for Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains tees, sweatshirts, jackets and hats. They also a lot of shirt and hat combos, which make the perfect gift. (1001 Parkway Suite 7)
Smoky Mountain Outfitters. Touted as the “Mom and Pop backpacking shop,” this hiking and camping outfitter provides great gear, exceptional service and technical and trail advice. (206 Long Branch Road)
NOC’s Great Outpost. With 18,000 square feet of outdoor gear, Nantahala Outdoor Center has absolutely everything you could need and want for the hiker on your list. Whether you’re looking for shoes, apparel, backpacks or hiking poles, you will find it in all the brands you love like Prana, Osprey, Patagonia and more. They also have tons of gear for paddle sports, cycling, rafting and climbing. I never make a trip to Gatlinburg without stopping at NOC. (1138 Parkway)
